Safety - Hexavalent Chromium

Monday, 12 September 2011 17:15

Hexavalent Chromium compounds are breathable carcinogen compounds that contain the element Chromium. Workers in various occupations are exposed to this dangerous chemical when they work with the following materials:

  • Welded or Cut Metals Containing Chromium (Stainless Steel)
  • Pigments Containing Dry Chromate
  • Spray Paints & Coatings that Contain Chromate
  • Chrome Plating Baths

Without the proper protection and equipment, employees can be seriously harmed by prolonged exposure to hexavalent chromium. Exposure may cause the following health problems:

  • Lung Cancer
  • Damage to the Respiratory System
  • Skin and Eye Damage

Health Problem Descriptions:

Cancer: All forms of hexavalent chromium are considered to be carcinogenic to workers. The longer the worker is in contact with and inhales hexavalent chromium the higher the risk becomes for that worker to develop cancer. Previous studies made on workers in chromate production, chromate pigment and chrome electroplating industries, (prior to 1980) showed an increased rate of lung cancer mortality.

Damage to the Respiratory System: The lungs, nose and throat can be severely irritated by repeated or prolonged exposure to hexavalent chromium. The membranes of the nasal passages can form ulcers that can cause nosebleeds and eventually the septum, separating the nasal passages, could be perforated. Allergies can develop and lead to asthma symptoms such as wheezing and shortness of breath.

Skin and Eye Damage: With prolonged exposure, dermatitis and skin ulcers could develop. Workers with very sensitive skin may be susceptible to serious skin rash that over time will become thick and crusty.

GR-6000: Premier Grinding Booth

Monday, 12 September 2011 12:38

Avani’s grinding booths provide complete freedom for workers to move effortlessly within the booth to perform any type of the manufacturing process. Other possible uses: welding, sanding, batch mixing, powder coating, painting, or required air quality assembly.

Grinding booths are commonly used where source capture is not practical. Booths can fit anywhere on the plant floor where you have open space. Booths come either self-contained or ducted to a collector away from the booth. Avani offers the standard open booth or forced air return(push-pull) system, which require less air volumes.

The GR-6000 is our Premier Grinding Booth. The 6000 series comes standard with 1 1/2" x 4" (rectangular tubing) skeleton with 12 gauge dual panels as the shell. Two gas or compressed air lines and dual 110V outlets are built into the back draft panel terminated on top for easy connections.

The Grinding Booth Features:

  • Two configurations (standard or forced air return)
  • No hoods or ductwork required on self-contained booths
  • Ledgeless construction (reduces dust build-up)
  • Non-self contained booths utilizing new or existing dust collectors
  • Standard or customized sizes, shapes, and walls
  • Easy high-efficiency cartridges
  • Vertical cartridge removal (no tools required)
  • Magnehelic gauge (filter life and required service intervals)
  • Easy removable dust drawers (below cartridge service door)
  • Single sided service (cartridges & dust drawers)
  • Modular design (allows for easy set up and expansion)
  • Dual sided 12-gauge welded steel walls
  • Powder coated (inside/outside)
  • High efficiency premium motors

  • Control UL approved control panel (full controls)
  • Built-In fork slots for easy placement

Optional Features:

  • HEPA filter or safety after filter assembly
  • Acoustical internal lined steel panels provide sound absorption
  • Vinyl front curtains with adjustable heights to close off booth completely
  • Vinyl acoustical fabric (lower cost alternative)
  • Vinyl (soft-wall) or PVC side and top panels (cost effective solution)
